Year 10 Geographers Swap Classroom for Coastline at Hornsea!
This week, our Year 10 Geography students traded their usual purple pens for trundle wheels, metre rulers, and clipboards as they embarked on an exciting field trip to Hornsea. With a fortuitous break in the June weather, the sun shone down on our 80 eager geographers as they set out to investigate coastal processes in action.
The primary focus of the morning was to test whether Longshore Drift was occurring at Hornsea beach. Armed with their tools, students measured sediment height differences along the groynes to gather evidence. Their hands-on approach not only brought classroom theories to life but also provided them with invaluable data for further analysis.
The bustling beach was a hub of activity, with many schools from across the country sharing the same curiosity about coastal dynamics. Our students stood out as respectful and exemplary leaders, navigating around 'hi-vis' clad toddlers exploring rock pools, and ensuring everyone had space to learn and enjoy.
After a productive morning, everyone took a well-deserved break. The local eateries benefitted from our group’s appetite, as fish and chips, ice creams, and waffles were enjoyed by all. A perfect way to support the local economy!
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to Hornsea's vibrant promenade. Students conducted pedestrian counts and created land use surveys to assess the impact of tourism on the local economy. Their diligent work provided a comprehensive picture of how tourism shapes this charming seaside town.
Throughout the day, our students were fantastic ambassadors for the school. Numerous locals and teachers from other schools praised their politeness and enthusiasm, reinforcing the positive image of our student community.
Back at school, the geography department is ready to dive into the collected data, guiding students through the processes of interpretation, analysis, and evaluation. This fieldwork will undoubtedly enhance their understanding of coastal geography and the importance of practical research.
Here’s to another successful and enlightening trip to the coast!
