Year 9 Students Step into the Trenches with WW1 Experience
Just before the Easter break, our Year 9 History GCSE students were treated to an unforgettable journey back in time, thanks to a visit from historical interpreter Richard Parsons. Arriving in full character as Sergeant Parsons, a World War I soldier, he brought the realities of trench warfare vividly to life.
Throughout the day, five Year 9 classes engaged in an immersive experience that combined authentic artefacts, dramatic role play, and cutting-edge virtual reality. Students had the unique opportunity to explore life on the front lines, gaining a deeper understanding of the conditions soldiers faced during the Great War.
What made the session particularly valuable was its direct connection to the GCSE History Medicine exam paper. Sergeant Parsons expertly wove key themes and historical content into his presentation, reinforcing classroom learning in a memorable and engaging way.
The response from students was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the session as eye-opening and inspiring, with several commenting that they would remember the experience — and the lessons learned — for a long time to come.
This interactive approach to history not only deepened students' knowledge but also sparked their enthusiasm for the subject. It was a powerful reminder of how stepping into the past can illuminate the present.
