Oulton Academy Celebrates National Recognition as Principal Wins Bronze in Prestigious Teaching Awards

Oulton Academy is celebrating a proud moment as Principal John Higgins has been named the Bronze Winner for Headteacher of the Year in a Secondary School at the Pearson National Teaching Awards 2025. The accolade, one of the most respected in UK education, recognises exceptional leadership and dedication to student success.

The award was presented by school governor David Murphy, who praised Mr. Higgins for his unwavering commitment to excellence and the transformative impact he has had on the school community.

“John’s leadership has been nothing short of inspirational,” said Mr. Murphy. “This award is a testament not only to his vision and drive but also to the incredible team of staff at Oulton Academy who work tirelessly every day to support our students.”

Mr Higgins, visibly moved by the recognition, dedicated the award to the entire school community.

“This isn’t just my award—it belongs to every member of staff at Oulton Academy,” said Mr. Higgins. “From our teachers and support staff to our pastoral team and admin, everyone plays a vital role in creating a nurturing, ambitious, and inclusive environment for our students. I’m incredibly proud to lead such a dedicated and passionate team.”

Oulton Academy has rapidly become the school of choice in the region, following its Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2024. The school is widely recognised for its inclusive ethos, strong academic outcomes, and commitment to student wellbeing.

The celebrations continue this week as Mr. Higgins and the school prepare to attend the TES Schools Awards 2025 in London on Friday—an event often described as the “Olympics of School Awards.” Oulton Academy is shortlisted for Best Secondary School in the Country, and Mr. Higgins is also a finalist for Best Headteacher in a Secondary School.

“To be recognised on a national stage like this is a huge honour,” Mr. Higgins added. “It reflects the incredible journey we’ve been on as a school and the collective effort of our entire community.”

Looking ahead, the future is even brighter for Oulton Academy. A new £48 million state-of-the-art school building is on the horizon, marking a major investment in the next generation of learners and further cementing its place as a leading institution in UK education.

With national recognition, a passionate team, and ambitious plans for the future, Oulton Academy continues to shine as a beacon of excellence and opportunity.
