Important Update – School Closure and Reopening

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for your patience and understanding this afternoon as we managed the unexpected closure of the school.

Earlier today, a water main leak approximately one mile from the school resulted in a complete loss of water on site. This meant we had no access to toilets, cleaning facilities, or sanitation. Closing a school is never an easy decision, but the health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Having nearly 1,300 people on site without access to clean water or toilets was not a safe situation.

Throughout the day, we maintained constant communication with Yorkshire Water to monitor the situation and ensure accurate updates. The decision to close the school was made after careful consideration of their advice and the health and safety implications.

As you can imagine, closing a school at short notice is a complex and lengthy task. Thank you to those parents who used the MCAS app and email service to help us release students efficiently. This process takes time to manage safely, and your cooperation made a significant difference. Unfortunately, a small minority of parents did not follow the guidance sent out, which caused some delays.

To ensure you receive urgent messages quickly in the future, please sign up for the MCAS app here:

As of 16:30 this evening, the school is back to full operational capacity, and we will be open as normal tomorrow, Thursday 15th January.

Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding. We would also like to thank Yorkshire Water for working closely with us throughout the day and the bus companies for their flexibility in helping us get students home safely.

Kind regards,

Oulton Academy
