Newspaper Team Meets with Principal Higgins to Explore New School Build

Last Friday the members of the Oulton Academy student newspaper team met with Principal Mr John Higgins for an inspiring and insightful discussion about the school’s upcoming new build project.

The meeting provided students with a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the plans, ask questions, and share their own perspectives on how the new facilities could best support the school community.

One of the highlights of the session was an exclusive chance to watch a 3D video of the new building. The animation guided students through the proposed layout, showcasing classrooms, shared spaces, and key design features. Seeing the building brought to life on screen helped everyone visualise how the new environment will look and feel once completed.

Student Voice at the Centre

The newspaper team shared a range of viewpoints with Mr Higgins, including hopes for more collaborative learning spaces, improved technology access, and areas dedicated to wellbeing and creativity. Mr Higgins spoke about how valuable it is to hear directly from students:

“This new build is about creating the best possible environment for learning,” Mr Higgins said. “Hearing your ideas helps ensure we design a school that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of our students.”

A short Q&A session followed, with students asking thoughtful questions about timelines, the impact on daily school life during construction, and how the new build will support future growth.

A Sweet Surprise

As the meeting drew to a close, Mr Higgins arranged for the team to receive ice creams as a thank‑you for their enthusiasm and contributions. The treats were very well received and added a fun, celebratory end to a productive afternoon.
