Future Medics: Year 10 Get Hands-On with Medical Mavericks Work Experience
Our Year 10 students recently took a bold step towards their future careers by diving into an immersive Medical Pathway work experience day. The session kicked off with an eye-opening presentation detailing the vast array of careers available within the NHS and private healthcare, proving that medicine offers far more than just the roles of doctor or nurse.
From Theory to Theatre
The energy shifted into high gear as students transitioned to hands-on clinical practice. Using professional-grade equipment, our aspiring medics rotated through several high-tech stations:
- Diagnostics: Students mastered blood pressure monitors and used ultrasound machines to peer beneath the skin.
- Clinical Skills: The "patient" dummy arm was a hit, with students successfully drawing fake blood using venepuncture techniques.
- Cardiac Care: Hearts were put to the test as students recorded and analysed rhythms using an ECG machine.
- Surgery & Senses: Focus was key during a simulated keyhole surgery challenge, while hearing health was explored using traditional tuning fork tests.
Inspiring the Next Generation
To round off the day, our Year 10s stepped into the role of mentors. In a final showcase session, they presented their newfound expertise to a Year 7 group, demonstrating the equipment and sharing insights into the medical world. It was fantastic to see our older students inspiring the younger years with such confidence.
A Huge Thank You
Oulton Academy would like to extend a massive thank you to the team from Medical Mavericks. It was truly an inspirational session that has sparked a real passion for healthcare careers in our students. We look forward to seeing where these clinical skills take them next!
