Unleashing Creativity: Year 8 and GCSE Art Students Shine in "We Explore Drawing" Workshop

Oulton Academy students from Year 8 and Year 10 GCSE Art recently participated in an immersive, full-day creative workshop led by external experts from We Explore Drawing. The day was a resounding success, pushing our students to take artistic risks, step out of their creative comfort zones, and master brand-new techniques across multiple mediums.

Morning Session: Bold Portraits and Charcoal Masterpieces

The day kicked off with an engaging and thought-provoking presentation on the history and techniques of Portraiture. Facilitated by the expert team from We Explore Drawing, students were introduced to professional methods before diving into the practical work.

Armed with charcoal, the students were guided through an exploration of the human face. Key highlights of the morning session included:

  • Expressive Mark Making: Students broke away from traditional sketching to use loose, bold, and energetic lines.
  • Creative Experimentation: The groups explored texture, deep shadows, and abstract forms to give their portraits an emotional depth.
  • Expert Guidance: One-on-one coaching from the visiting specialists helped students build confidence in handling a traditionally messy and unpredictable medium.

The resulting charcoal portraits were nothing short of fantastic, demonstrating immense individual growth and artistic maturity, especially vital for our Year 10s working toward their GCSE portfolios.

Afternoon Session: Colour Theory and Dynamic Still Life

After lunch, the studio shifted focus from monochrome to a vibrant exploration of paint. The afternoon session focused on the foundational mechanics of Colour Theory and the intricacies of colour mixing.

Students applied their knowledge directly to a series of observational still-life paintings. This block focused heavily on:

  • Colour and Context: Exploring how adjacent colours influence one another and completely alter the mood of an artwork.
  • Dramatic Colouring: Pushing past realism to use bold, un-blended, and high-contrast palettes.
  • Confidence Building: Overcoming the fear of the "white page" by embracing unpredictable colour relationships.

Looking to the Future

This workshop provided a perfect bridge between basic foundational skills and advanced GCSE project work. The techniques learned will directly impact the coursework of our Year 10 students and inspire our Year 8s as they consider future creative paths.

Oulton Academy would like to extend a massive thank you to the talented staff from We Explore Drawing for dedicating their time and providing such a fantastic, memorable experience for our students. We look forward to seeing how these newly acquired skills flourish in the classroom and in future studio portfolios!
